The ESOL Program of Queen Anne’s County Public Schools provides English language acquisition instruction to any qualifying non-English speaking student enrolled in the county’s schools. Thirteen languages are represented in the ESOL Program:  Spanish, Urdu, Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, Russian, Greek, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Tagalog, Swedish, Japanese and Korean.  81% of the county’s English Language Learners (ELL) speaks Spanish. There are 19 different countries, including the United States, represented by the ELL.

There are six training/staff development sessions for the ESOL instructors concentrating on ESOL methodology, second language acquisition, ELL accommodation and assessment and the most current program guidelines. The program also provides staff development opportunities for classroom and content area teachers in the areas of:

  • stages of language acquisition
  • differentiating content area instruction for ELL
  • culturally responsive teaching
  • second language acquisition and special education

Interpretive and translation services are available upon request by calling or emailing the ESOL Office.
